Majors, Minors and Degrees

What You Need to Know

  • You can only change your major during certain times of the year.  See the Academic Calendar for these approved dates.
  • You may apply for pre-major status if you have a UK cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher AND you have the prerequisites to enroll in, or have completed, MA 110.

What You Need to Do

  • To begin the major change process, please fill out this online form. Your record will be reviewed and admission will be determined.
  • If you are accepted, you will receive an email verification of your admission. Take this verification to your current college, fill out a change of major form and you will be given paperwork to deliver to Engineering Student Records (offices are located in 355S or 355R F. Paul Anderson Tower).
  • Once you have delivered the paperwork to Engineering Student Records your major will be officially declared and you will be assigned an academic advisor in the college.

What You Need to Know

  • For students declaring or changing out of an engineering major, you can only do so during certain times of the year.  See the Academic Calendar for these approved dates.  For students declaring or changing from one engineering major to another, the period to change is always open.
  • Any student can change majors during the designated approved periods but certain restrictions apply.  Majors in Colleges of Business and Economics, Communication and Information, Design, Health Sciences, Nursing, Public Health, and the major of Landscape Architecture (all “Selective”) must first apply and then be accepted into the major prior to declaring.

What You Need to Do

  • To begin the major change process, engineering students should come to Engineering Student Records (offices are located in 355S or 355R F. Paul Anderson Tower).
  • Bring your UK student ID with you. If you have been permitted into a selective major, bring your admission notice. Proof of acceptance must be presented in order to release your records.

Double Major

A student fulfills the college requirements for the student’s PRIMARY major and departmental requirements (including the Graduation Composition and Communications Requirement (GCCR)) for the second major.

The student will receive one diploma with both majors listed.

Example:

Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering
Chemical Engineering
Chemistry

Dual Degree

A student fulfills the college and departmental requirements for BOTH degrees.  The student must have 24 earned hours over and above the number required for the student’s PRIMARY degree.  For example, for a dual degree Computer Engineering (CPE) and Electrical Engineering (EE), CPE requires 128 hours so the student must fulfill both degree requirements (including the Graduation Composition and Communications Requirement (GCCR)) and have a total of 152 hours to graduate with two degrees.

The student will receive two diplomas – one for each degree.

Example:

1st Diploma:  Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering

2nd Diploma:  Bachelor of Science
Mathematics

Note:  For students intending to double degree or major, the engineering major MUST be the PRIMARY degree or major.

A minor is a structured group of courses leading to a knowledge and understanding of a subject, but with less depth than a major. Minor options are described with the major programs in the UK Bulletin and also on the UK Registrar’s Majors & Minors web site.
