The UK College of Engineering offers numerous academic enhancements that allow you to specialize in your area of interest, study in other countries, conduct research with engineering faculty even as an undergraduate student, blend engineering with leadership or business and more.
Engineering Living Learning Program
The ELLP offers a unique opportunity to students who are passionate about pursuing a career in engineering or computer science to live together in a community focused on one goal – academic success. This residential experience complements classroom expectations by integrating students into the engineering community with programs centered on professional development and enhancement of the classroom experience.
Engineering Leadership Program
The ELP and its associated course, EGR 490, offer unique opportunities to meet personally with individuals whose responsibilities impact engineering in Kentucky and beyond. These leaders have taken time out of their personal schedules not only to serve as guest speakers, but also to attend dinners for the class, offering an added opportunity to interact with and learn from them.
If you want to specialize in an area that may not be covered by your major, a certificate may be right for you. While certificate programs feature courses dedicated to specific areas of expertise, they do not require as many credit hours as minors.
At most universities, meaningful research opportunities with top faculty members are reserved for graduate students. Not in the UK College of Engineering. You can make significant contributions to faculty research as early as the spring semester of your freshman year. Undergraduate research experiences complement your classroom education and give you a competitive advantage on your resume.
Engineering Scholars Programs
Scholars programs within the college give engineering and computer science students a path toward specialization in a specific topic combined with learning experiences outside the classroom. Scholars programs require students to participate in leadership, entrepreneurship or undergraduate research opportunities in order to assimilate classroom material into real-life situations.
The University Scholars program offers motivated students the chance to integrate undergraduate and graduate courses of study in a single, continuous program that culminates in both a bachelor’s and a master’s or doctoral degree. As a University Scholar, you can apply up to 12 hours of graduate coursework toward both your undergraduate and graduate degrees.
A joint program between the UK College of Engineering and the Gatton College of Business and Economics, the Scholars in Engineering and Management (SEAM) honors program integrates business and engineering at the undergraduate level. Cross-functional classes and activities produce entrepreneurial-minded graduates well-equipped for today’s global economy.
Engineering/MBA Dual Degree
Did you know you can receive an undergraduate degree in engineering and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in just five years? The Engineering/MBA Dual Degree program puts you on the fast track to a well-rounded engineering or business career and even includes a two-week international trip at the end of the final year.
In our global economy, you can expect to work and collaborate with leaders and engineers from other cultures. Through the college’s education abroad programs, you can study in Germany, Italy, China, Malaysia, Japan, Brazil, Scotland and other more—usually without delaying progress toward your engineering degree. Consider increasing your versatility and broadening your horizons by making an unforgettable international study experience part of your academic plan.
Capstone Design Opportunities
The College of Engineering offers two opportunities for students to receive support for their capstone design project:
- Medical Device Design for Space or Extreme Environments
- Reese Terry Engineering Capstone Design Support for Medical and Health Applications.
