All incoming Engineering students are required to have a laptop computer for use in their academic studies.
Dell and Apple have been the preferred vendors of The University of Kentucky for several years, and through these relationships UK students and employees receive discounts on computers and other items purchased through the UK Dell discount site and UK Apple Employee/Student discount site. Engineering students may also purchase Microsoft Surface Book 2 computers at a discount through Engineering’s private Microsoft Store.
UK Students are not required to purchase computers from Dell or Apple, but any laptop you choose should meet or exceed the Engineering’s minimum specifications.
Which calculator a student can use in a class, at least on their tests, is determined by the individual faculty members. In the first few semesters, students will generally be allowed to use calculators that are allowed on the SAT, ACT, or AP tests (basically, calculators that are not capable of performing symbolic manipulations). The Texas Instrument’s TI-84 plus falls into this category, as do similar Hewlett-Packard models. Later in their academic careers students will be able to use more powerful models.
Though students will have access to Google or Microsoft cloud drives, we recommend that students have an external hard drive to back their computer up to. They should also have a couple inexpensive thumb/jump drives for use as needed.
