Fellowship Opportunities

The College of Engineering awards a number of fellowships each year to outstanding students with proven records of academic achievement.

Not only are fellowships awarded to students within the College’s academic departments and graduate programs, fellowships are also awarded in specific research areas. Some of these latter programs include construction management and engineering, transportation engineering, BS/MBA program, vibro-acoustics, and others.

How to Apply/Criteria 

Applications are now being accepted for fellowships administered by the Engineering Office of Research and Graduate Studies.

Required application material:

  • Cover letter – include name of academic advisor, status in current graduate program, year graduate studies began, and information on financial support.
  • CV
  • Unofficial transcript
  • Research prospectus/plan for research
  • Letter of recommendation from a graduate advisor
  • Letter of recommendation from Director of Graduate Studies

College of Engineering Fellowships


Elise White Boyd Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Recipients must be accepted for admission to and maintain full-time enrollment in the MS or Ph.D. degree program in electrical engineering
  • So long as women are underrepresented in the College of Engineering graduate program, preference shall be given to women students

Halcomb Fellowship in Medicine and Engineering

  • Must be a current student in either the College of Medicine or the College of Engineering.
  • Shall have active mentors from both the College of Medicine and College of Engineering
  • Shall have demonstrated intellectual and academic achievement and leadership

Harrison D. Brailsford Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Supplement to another assistantship or fellowship
  • U.S. citizen
  • Must be enrolled in a Ph.D. program in the College of Engineering

Dr. Robert D. Hayes Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Recipient must be currently enrolled in or qualified for admission into electrical and computer engineering
  • Must be a member of Eta Kappa Nu
  • Preference shall be given to UK graduates

Burton E. Heard Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Must be pursuing a Ph.D. in an engineering discipline
  • Supplement to another assistantship or fellowship.

Margaret Ingels SWE Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Recipient must have been accepted to and maintain full-time enrollment in a MS or Ph.D. program in an engineering discipline
  • Recipient must have demonstrated participation and leadership in student organizations, societies and activities as an undergraduate
  • So long as women are underrepresented in the College of Engineering graduate program, preference shall be given to women students

Dr. Karl Otto Lange Memorial Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • U.S. citizen
  • Kentucky native
  • Must be admitted to or enrolled in the MS in Manufacturing Engineering degree program

Burt L. Sims Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must be pursuing a graduate degree in the UK College of Engineering
  • Must demonstrate potential for a successful career after graduation.

Tapp Family Environmental Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • US citizen
  • Kentucky native
  • Must have received a BS degree from the UK College of Engineering
  • Must be pursuing a graduate degree in either civil engineering or biosystems/agricultural engineering
  • Can be pursuing either an MS or Ph.D. degree
  • Area of emphasis must be in environmental engineering
  • Supplement to another assistantship or fellowship

USEC Inc. Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined.
  • Recipient must be enrolled or qualified for admission into the College of Engineering via the UK Graduate School
  • Recipient shall be pursuing a graduate degree in Engineering

 

College of Engineering Departmental Fellowships


Kenneth H. and Susan W. Beard Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must be enrolled in UK BS (engineering)/ MBA program
  • Recipient must demonstrate potential for academic success

CSX Transportation Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Undergraduate course work must have been completed at UK
  • Must be currently enrolled or qualified for admission in civil engineering via the UK Graduate School
  • Preference shall be given to students interested in Transportation Engineering and particularly Railroad Engineering

Thaddeus Bankson Curtz Memorial Scholarship Fund

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must be enrolled on a full-time basis in graduate level courses in the Department of Computer Science.
  • Must demonstrate the potential for academic excellence and shows need for financial assistance
  • Awarded annually at the end of the spring semester to that full-time graduate student in the Department of Computer Science who has completed one year of graduate study.

Thomas B. & Bettie T. Deen Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must be currently enrolled or qualified for admission in civil engineering via the UK Graduate School
  • Must be majoring in civil engineering
  • Must demonstrate aptitude, intensity of interest and likelihood of pursuing a career in a transportation related field.
  • Must demonstrate financial need.

R.C. Durr Civil Engineering Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must be enrolled or qualified for admission into civil engineering via the UK Graduate School
  • U.S. citizen or documented U.S. permanent resident
  • Preference given to students in Construction Management

Thomas C. and Evelyn W. Finnie BS/MBA Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Recipient must be enrolled in the BS Engineering/MBA program
  • Recipient must demonstrate potential for academic success

C. Michael Garver Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of the fellowship determined
  • Must be enrolled in or qualified for admission in Civil Engineering via the Graduate School
  • Preference shall be given to students in Construction Management

Gill Engineering Excellence Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must be enrolled in either Materials Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Computer Science
  • Research should be at the interface of science and engineering.
  • Priority will be given to individuals whose research create or utilize technology to gain a better understanding of the origin and cure of disease.

James F. Hardymon Graduate Fellowship in the BS/MBA

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must be enrolled in the BS (engineering)/MBA program
  • Must exhibit outstanding academic potential for success in this dual degree program

Harper Industries, Inc. Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must be either currently enrolled or qualified for admission to the Department of Mechanical Engineering graduate program via the UK Graduate School

William H. McAdams Graduate Fellowship in Chemical Engineering

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited program in chemical engineering.
  • Awarded to “young B.S. graduates in chemical engineering who are deemed outstanding candidates for scholarly study and research in the field and who are particularly interested in pursuing a doctorate in chemical engineering at UK.

MCI WORLDCOM Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must be pursuing academic work in networking and communications
  • Must be either currently enrolled or qualified for admission into the College of Engineering graduate program via the UK Graduate School

Mining Engineering Foundation Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must be a full-time student admitted to graduate study via the UK Graduate School
  • Recipient will be chosen based upon the significance of applicant’s proposed research to the mining industry.

Gerald L. Nichols Graduate Fellowship in Civil Engineering

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must be a senior enrolled in an engineering program or a student who has earned an undergraduate degree in engineering
  • Must be currently enrolled or qualified for admission into civil engineering via the UK Graduate School
  • Preference shall be given to students in the Department of Civil Engineering

Raymond-Terrell Fellowship in Civil Engineering

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must be a seniors enrolled in an engineering program or a student who has earned an undergraduate degree in civil engineering
  • Must be currently enrolled or qualified for admission into civil engineering via the UK Graduate school
  • U.S. citizens or documented U.S. permanent residents

James and Diane Stuckert Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Fellowship is for an MBA student with UK College of Engineering BS degree

Thomas J. and Viva B. Timmons Graduate Fellowship in Civil Engineering

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must be currently enrolled or qualified for admission in civil engineering via the UK Graduate School

The Trane Company Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Recipient must be currently enrolled or qualified for admission into the Department of Mechanical Engineering via the UK Graduate School
  • Recipient’s research is supportive of Vibro-Acoustics

TVA Power Engineering Fund Fellowship for Electrical Engineering

  • U.S. citizen per Homeland Security guidelines
  • Recipient’s research interest must be in power engineering

TVA Power Engineering Fund Fellowship for Mechanical Engineering

  • U.S. citizen per Homeland Security guidelines
  • Recipient’s research interest must be in power engineering

Vaughn and Melton Graduate Fellowship in Civil Engineering

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Recipients must have earned an undergraduate degree in engineering
  • Recipients must either be enrolled or eligible for admission into civil engineering via the UK Graduate School
  • Vaughn & Melton may request that consideration be given to employees or family members of employees
  • Preference shall be given to students who are residents of Bell, Knox, or Harlan counties, Kentucky; Lee County, Virginia; or Claiborne County, Tennessee

Verizon Communications Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must be either currently enrolled or qualified for admission into the College of Engineering graduate program via the UK Graduate School
  • Must be pursuing a graduate degree in Computer Science

Arthur E. Walker Jr. Graduate Fellowship in Civil Engineering

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Must have been accepted into the graduate program in Civil Engineering  via the UK Graduate School
  • Preference shall be given to students in the Construction Management

Whalen Graduate Fellowship

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Recipient must be pursuing a degree in chemical or materials engineering
  • Recipients must be currently enrolled or qualified for admission into the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering via the UK Graduate School

Ellis G. Williams Fellowship

  • Must be a graduate student in the UK Department of Civil Engineering
  • Must have a demonstrated interest in asphalt research and design
