Schafrik Honored with two Awards for Excellence

Steven Schafrik, director of graduate studies and associate professor in the Department of Mining Engineering, received awards from the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America and Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration.

2023 Stephen McCann Award for Excellence in Education from the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America

Steven Schafrik received the 2023 Stephen McCann Award for Excellence in Education from the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America (PCMIA).

The PCMIA annually recognizes an individual for his/her exemplary contributions to minerals education with achievements that are timely and of a continuous nature.

The selection of a successful recipient is based on the candidate’s overall career impact on educational services provided to the mining industry. Judgment includes consideration of contributions, results achieved and the nominee’s commitment of quality mining education. The nominee may be an individual or an educational, private or governmental organization.

The award was presented at the annual luncheon of the PCMIA. 


2023 Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration President’s Individual Citation Award

Schafrik has also received the 2023 Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) President’s Individual Citation Award. Established in 1978, this award recognizes significant individual contribution and leadership in the mining industry.

The following citation was prepared by SME: 

“SME recognizes Steven J. Schafrik for his outstanding efforts and leadership for the 2023 SME Midyear Meeting in Lexington, Kentucky. His efforts provided the Society with a spectacular venue while engaging the local SME Student Chapter and everything was delivered with Kentucky hospitality. His leadership in facilitating a keynote session on topics of innovation and national regulatory issues has helped improve the future well-being of the Society.”

The award will be presented to Schafrik at the 2024 SME Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, Arizona during the awards celebration on Feb. 28.
