The RescuKats Return with Heavy Hearts

November 22, 2021

The University of Kentucky RescuKats mine rescue team returned to in-person competition with heavy hearts following the passing of their beloved trainer and mentor Danny Knott.

Danny, a National Coal Mine Rescue Hall of Famer, led the RescuKats to be the most successful collegiate mine rescue team. It is with his wisdom and love for others that the RescuKats compete and this will be passed on to future team members.

The RescuKats are exceptionally grateful for all those who helped the team prepare and compete from the Madisonville Community College, Alliance Coal and notably Chris Williams who stepped in for Danny.

The team placed a strong second, being bested only by West Virginia University’s most experienced team in a contest that hosted five teams from Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and the University of Kentucky.

These contests allow the next generation of mine rescue team members to hone skills that all hope will never be required.

Mining families can find peace knowing when their loved one’s leave for work that if the unthinkable occurs, the mining community's finest stand ready and there is nothing that will stop them from bringing their brothers and sisters home.
