The college has three scholarship applications for incoming freshmen.
Thomas Lester Scholarship Program
To apply for this College of Engineering competitive academic-based scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:
- Apply for admission to The University of Kentucky, indicating Engineering as your major, by December 30th.
- All transcripts, including test scores, must be received (not postmarked) by the Office of Admissions by December 30th.
- A composite ACT score of 29 or SAT score of 1280
- An ACT Math score of 33 or SAT Math score of 740
- A cumulative unweighted high school GPA of 3.5
Once students have applied to the university and met the requirements listed above, we will send the application via email, as well as a letter through the mail, to the address provided on the UK admissions application. The deadline to have this application returned to our office is January 15.
Applicants are chosen based on extracurricular activities, awards and recognition, courses taken, work experience and community service and writing ability. This award allows students to receive a total of $12,000 over a four-year (eight semester) period.
Financial Needs Based Scholarships
There are two need-based scholarship opportunities for new incoming freshmen who are of residents of Kentucky:
- L. Stanley Pigman Engineering Scholarship
- Robert B. and Helen P. Jewell Foundation Scholarship
The first week in January, these applications will be emailed to all incoming freshmen who have applied to The University of Kentucky by December and listed Engineering as their major. (We will use the email address provided on the application for admission.) Only those with financial need are considered for these awards so a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid, www.fafsa.ed.gov ) must be on file for the student so that we can verify that need. The FAFSA can be completed beginning January 1 for the upcoming school year, and taxes do not have to be complete to apply. Families can estimate income in order to get the FAFSA done early and update it once the taxes are complete. The University will receive the FAFSA information approximately two weeks after completion. The deadlines for these scholarship applications are February 15th.
Each application will be reviewed by the College of Engineering Scholarship Committee as designated by the Dean. Students are awarded on the basis of GPA, ACT or SAT scores, writing ability, leadership potential and financial need. The committee will decide if a scholarship will be awarded, and if so, the amount of the award. These awards range from $1000 to $7500. Each year there are approximately 10 new need-based awards.
