Thermal fluids sciences involve the applications of fundamental laws of fluid flow, heat transfer and thermodynamics to the understanding and development of systems and processes. Visualization for thermal fluid sciences capture images or depict scientific phenomena controlling systems or processes, and is accomplished by experimental and simulation techniques. Visualization is accomplished by determining spatial and temporal changes of temperature, velocity, and particle motion and concentrations. It aids and enhances the identification of root causes of problems and provides insights for developing solutions. At the IR4TD, several visualization tools are used for understanding thermal fluids sciences, including thermal imaging, particle image velocimetry (PIV), visual imaging and computer simulation. This experience and the knowledge of IR4TD researchers are available to assist industries overcome processing and systems inefficiencies, and to develop new applications in medical disciplines and in coatings and structural integrity assessments.
