GEMS is a chance for girls to explore the scientific method, science in daily life, the connections between math and science and careers options scientists with exciting instruction and hands-on experiments. Participants will be exposed to careers in engineering, chemistry, nursing, physics, medicine and many other science-related fields.
GEMS kicks off with a keynote speaker in the Worsham Theater, followed by three one-hour sessions with UK professors. Past sessions have included bridge building, explorations of human body systems, computer programming and teambuilding. Most classes are held in RGAN, Anderson Tower and the Center for Manufacturing. The nursing, physiology, psychology and physics lab sessions are held in their respective labs on campus.
The Girl Scouts of America will collaborate with the College of Engineering and Center for Manufacturing for the event. The Kentucky American Water Company will also co-sponsor GEMS, which will mark its fifth year at UK.
