Welcome to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Kentucky!
Our vision is to be a community of scholars and knowledge seekers, a place where a diverse group of students and faculty come together to make an impact on our Commonwealth, our nation, and our world through innovation in electrical and computer engineering. In pursuit of this goal, we offer programs leading to a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and computer engineering, as well as master's and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering. Our 450+ undergraduate and 100+ graduate students represent some of the best and brightest in Kentucky and beyond and are actively engaged with our 25 full-time faculty members and instructors in cutting-edge educational and research activities.
These are exciting times! Many of the dramatic changes society has experienced over the last century have resulted from the work of electrical and computer engineers. Our profession continues to push the frontiers of excellence and innovation in areas such as communications, computers, energy, health care, national defense, manufacturing and entertainment. University of Kentucky ECE graduates and alumni play an important role in turning this new knowledge into reality as industry leaders across the globe.
Our faculty and staff are committed to supporting our students and advancing electrical and computer engineering through teaching, research and service. Our faculty attract significant research funding from both government and industry, performing nationally recognized, cutting edge research in a variety of disciplines, including power and energy, advanced manufacturing, nanotechnology, computational electromagnetics, quantum computing and many others. The department plays a leading role in several large-scale research centers and institutes, including the Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CeNSE), as well as the Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky (PEIK). Many of our faculty are internationally recognized experts in these areas who have received prestigious awards and honors.
Our programs are designed to enable our students to build successful and rewarding careers. This starts with a strong freshman year experience that introduces core engineering principles and concepts and continues with a carefully constructed hands-on curriculum that builds up key technical skills. Students have flexibility through a broad set of advanced electives and complete their program by applying their knowledge to a real-life Capstone Project.
