Admission to Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science is located within the University of Kentucky College of Engineering. In order to be accepted as a computer science major, you need to be accepted into the College of Engineering as well. The admission process for the college is quite selective.

Minimum criteria

At least one of the following is necessary for admission to the UK College of Engineering:

  • ACT math score of 23 or higher, or the SAT equivalent
  • 3 or above on the Calculus AB portion of the Advanced Placement Exam
  •  Eligible for MA 110 based on the result of the UK Math Department Placement Exam
  • Completion of MA 110 Analytic Geometry and Trigonometry (or the equivalent, as determined by the director of undergraduate studies) with a grade of C or higher
  • Completion of MA 109 College Algebra and MA 112 Trigonometry with a grade of C or higher

Additionally, students must meet the minimum Kentucky statewide academic readiness requirements for reading and writing to be admitted to the College of Engineering:

  • ACT reading score of 20 or above (or SAT subscore of 470 or above in Critical Reading)
  • ACT English subscore of 18 or above for SAT of 430 or above in writing
