GEMS

Each year, since 2005, girls from all over Kentucky have visited the University of Kentucky College of Engineering for a one day event to explore the fun behind STEM. GEMS is a collaboration between the University of Kentucky and the Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road Council. GEMS is not only an opportunity for girls to gain hands on experience from local STEM related experts in their field, most workshops are facilitated by women mentors.  Come discover why GEMS is such a ‘joule!’ GEMS is a chance to teach girls about:

  • Careers in science
  • The Scientific Method
  • Science in daily life
  • How much math and science are connected

Did you know that even though women make up nearly 52% of the workforce, they only make up 14% of the workforce in science and technology careers?

Girls do not need to be a Girl Scout to attend!

All girl participants must be accompanied by at least one adult chaperone. An adult can chaperone a group of up to 6 girl participants.  If you are attending as the only adult chaperone for a girl participant, you must stay with the girl participant for the duration of the event; you will not be able to attend the adult workshops. All adult chaperones must register and pay the registration fee to attend. Cost of registration covers insurance for the adult participant.

When groups of non-scouts complete the registration form, please add a unique name to the area of the registration form that says:  “Troop number/Group”     By doing this, it will alert the Girl Scout office to keep the girls together throughout the day and also show the scout office who the chaperone will be for the group.

We will be offering parent waiting rooms in each area near where the classes will take place for your convenience.  Some parents like to sit in the back of the room and observe and that is always an option also, if space is available.   Parents do not need to know where the classes will be held as a UK college student has volunteered to be the guide to take the group of 20 girls and their parents to each workshop.

Register here.

LUNCH WILL NOT BE PROVIDED (new this year), but you will have an hour to either enjoy a packed lunch on campus or go to one of the various restaurants near campus. Please check back for more information about restaurant choices nearby that will be open on a Saturday in November.

For more information, please contact:

All paper registrations must be submitted to the Lexington Service Center: Attn: Katie Justice 2277 Executive Dr. Lexington, KY 40505 by Friday October 20, 2017.

Parent Workshops

We now are offering Parent Workshops. The workshops will be conducted by the College of Engineering’s Associate Dean for Administration and Academic Affairs, Dr. Kim Anderson and Kim Sayre, Director of Industrial Engagement. Both of these ladies are UK administrators that work with students on a daily basis. They are both engineers and both recently had a child successfully go through the Engineering Program here at UK. They can speak about their experiences from an administrative and from a parent’s perspective. Click here for more information.

Opening Ceremony in Singletary Center

We listened to our past participants’ surveys and added a fourth workshop to the schedule this year instead of a Keynote Speaker.

Lunch hour “on your own” by either going to a nearby campus restaurant or by bringing a packed lunch and having a picnic on the campus grounds
