Abstract

Whitlock, Dalrymple, Poston and Associates, Inc. (WDP) has been selected to conduct a project to evaluate and repair cable-stay vibrations at the Fred Hartman and Veterans Memorial Bridges. The primary purpose of the overall project is to mitigate damage and risk for, and increase public confidence in, the Fred Hartman and Veterans Memorial Bridges by preventing or reducing stay-cable vibrations. The specific objectives of the overall project include the following: 1) design/construction document review, 2) literature review, 3) aerodynamic analysis, 4) dynamic response analysis, 5) component analysis, 6) failure analysis, 7) wind tunnel testing (if required), 8) monitoring (Fred Hartman and Veterans Memorial), 9) field evaluation (Fred Hartman and Veterans Memorial), and 10) repair program (Fred Hartman and Veterans Memorial).

The primary purpose for the University of Kentucky (UK) to participate is to provide structural dynamic model correlation and analysis to evaluate repair alternatives for prevention and reduction of stay-cable vibrations for the Fred Hartman and Veterans Memorial Bridges. UK efforts will contribute to the overall project specific objectives: literature review, dynamic response analysis, field evaluation, and monitoring. The twelve-month project is being completed by Matt Johnson and Michael Schrader, Dept. of Civil Engineering, University of Kentucky under the direction of Dr. Suzanne Weaver Smith, P.E.
