Homeworks

There will be regular, weekly homework assignments. They will be handed out every Wednesday and are to be turned in at the beginning of the lecture the following Wednesday . Solutions of the HW problems will be posted on the web on Wednesdays.

Midterm Exams

During the semester, there will be two 50-minute exams.

Grading

Exams 40%  (20% each); Quizzes 15% (5% each); Final 30%; Homeworks 15%

Course Goals

By taking this course, you will understand the fundamentals of thermodynamics, including the concepts and the use of energy and entropy.  You will learn how to apply the zeroth, first, and second laws of thermodynamics to practical engineering concepts. Homeworks and exams will to be used to measure your level of success in reaching these goals.

Other

You are expected to

1.      have completed PHY 231;

2.      spend at least six (6) hours per week outside the classroom to study the material covered in this course;  

3.      work on all HW problems assigned; and

4.      bring the textbook to class for every lecture.
