JAVA 3-D APPLET SETUP

3-DIMENSIONAL GALLERY SETUP
To view the 3-D gallery you must have some JAVA software
installed. It is definitely worth it and only needs to be done once. Although it
may take a while we hope to develop downloadable installations so users can
create their own galleries. Developers: Charles Casey and Veerganesh
Yalla.
Here are the steps that you need to do or verify before
being able to use the online viewer.
- You must
have the JRE installed. You probably already have this but if you go to
the following site, you can both “verify” or “download” the latest. http://www.java.com I did notice that if you already
have a JRE version, you will be asked to remove it using your Conrol Panel – Remove Software.
- This
is most likely the software you really need but don’t have on your system
yet. Download and install it from:
http://www.downloadjava3d.com/java3dtest.php.
- FOR
THE BIGGER FILES (>10MB), you may need to increase your heap memory.
After you installed the Java, (for MS XP), in Steps 1 and 2, a JAVA icon
will show up in your
“Control Panel” Folder. Click on the JAVA icon to open up
the controls. Then select the JAVA tab. In the “Java Applet Runtime
Settings” group, select “View.” This will bring up a DIALOG SHOWN AT END
OF THIS WEBPAGE where you double click and enter “-Xmx256M” to increase
the memory. Then select OK and Apply, Technically you should be able to
increase it to -Xmx512M but we found some systems that would not work. If
something doesn’t work, the applet won’t open and it just puts a little X
marker where the window should be. REBOOT or RESTART your computer.
TOO MANY OPEN WINDOWS will use up the heap memory so to free
up memory, close the browser windows after viewing the applets.

Figure X: This is where you can increase your Heap memory
after selecting the JAVA
Icon in the Control Panel folder.
