NON-CONTACT 3-D SCANS OF PREHISTORIC ART WORK AT A CAVE IN MISSOURI*

Updated 10-29-2010, at the time of the update, the GL3DView could not view the high res (HR) 18 mega-point data. So you will only be able to view up to 2X or the 8 mega-point data sets.

Expedition date: September 25, 2010

*The “cave in Missouri” has human footprints, bear paw prints and artwork, possibly dating back more than 500 years when it was sealed by a cave in at its entrance. In exchange for generous access of scientific exploration and study, the landowners of the cave have requested that the location remain secret, in order to maintain their privacy and insure the cave and its rare artifacts are preserved.

DATA

You will need to use the GL3DView.exe application to view and/or convert the data to other formats. The MAT5 format is an open format and the input C source code is available. In general the data is very large. We use WinZip with their special ZIPX mode for double the compression. We provide the original jpeg texture image along with the skinned data at different resolutions from the depth resolution, to 2X (four times more pixels) and up to full texture resolution. We can provide accuracy information from the calibration files if requested. Some of the mixed resolution files are slightly off because the zoom lens on the digital camera was bumped during the transport. We believe the mixing is within 1 mm but the bumped lens went towards wide angle. Never the less, the scans are excellent. If there is a need to get higher accuracy in the mixing, we can take the time and conduct more post processing to do that for specific data.
