OVERVIEW OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS CURRICULUM

(Updated 10-18-99)

Diagram of Generic Communication System:

A flow diagram is presented which includes common components of communication systems.

Expanded Diagram of Communication System:

The flow diagram can be expanded to include more detail in terms of sub-topics. Also, note that dual systems such as transmitters/receivers, encoders/decoders, etc., are joined because they share similar concepts and are typically taught together.

Class Association with the Communication System Components:

Lines are drawn between courses and sub-components in the flow diagram. These lines indicate the student's exposure to the concepts of these sub-components. Exposure may include homework problems, design projects or laboratory experience.

The diagrams above represent our approach to understanding the relationship between our curriculum and our course offerings. We are always looking for new courses that will strengthen our curriculum so course suggestions are encouraged. Send your comments or suggestions to lgh@engr.uky.edu. Put UKCOMMSYS in the Subject box.
