Parts as suggested for EE511 projects 2001

Updated 9-24-01

I suggest trying to buy parts from the IEEE parts store. They only charge a small overhead charge (which is good for the IEEE student section) and by buying in quantities they reduce the shipping overhead. And you can just buy what you need. LGH

Project 1: Encoding and Decoding

Jameco 27422 (LM555 timer), at $0.25 each for more than 10

Project 2: Optical Link

Project requires a power driver (probably a 2N2222), a transducer (Laser, ultra-bright LED, Infra-red LED or an array of LEDs), a sensor (infra-red or visible/pin diode or photo-transister, a preamp (couple LF347 quad opamps) and an 1 bit A/D (configure a op amp with a signal diode as a comparator to yield 0 or Vcc output).

Visible

Jameco 152805 (Red ultra bright LED) 2000 mcd at 20ma, 660nm, $0.35 each

Allied Electronic 980-0140 (wide angle photodiode VTP1188S) $1.80 each (these are really good)

Allied can be contacted at 502-339-0114 or http://www.alliedelec.com
