Course compliant with departmental baseline EE499 Syllabus.

Outcomes:

Students completing this course should demonstrate the:

1. Ability to effectively work in groups to develop and propose engineering solutions.

2. Ability to apply previously acquired engineering principles as well as learn new principles in solving a large engineering design problem.

3. The ability to communicate and thoroughly document the results of an engineering design project to the engineering community using a variety of media (report, web page).

            Class Content and Objective:

The content of "Senior Design" has two aspects (1) Engineering Design Theory and (2) Design Experience. A lecture series, coupled with sub-tasks and class discussion, covering Design Theory will be provided twice a week for most of the semester. The theory will detail the individual processes involved in going from a "problem to be solved" to a final "Solution." Examples will be given and the design theory will be relevant to the project tasks. Another aspect of the design theory will cover group dynamics, which include brainstorming and mind mapping techniques. The Design Experience will be the goal of the students to implement their ideas into an operational system. System performance and its impact on society will also be part of the student’s experience.

Students enrolled in EE 499 will be grouped in teams of 3-4 students each.  Each team will submit a design proposal to the coordinator and will execute the design project after the proposal has been evaluated and accepted by the faculty coordinator in consultation with a faculty advisor and a team of Industrial Advisors.

Group Responsibilities: The class will be subdivided into discussion groups. Each discussion group will select a group captain who will represent the groups. Group will submit a pre-proposal for approval. The groups will define the test protocol that their projects will be tested with. The groups will define performance measures for the projects are graded on performance. Group will submit final report and present project. Individual members will be graded on their contribution, meeting their deadlines and individual subtasks. Group size must be 2 to 4 members.

Individual Responsibilities: Each individual is responsible for designing, building and debugging their component of the project and for preparing a section of the group web based report. The projects along with tools should cost about $70. Projects will be graded on creativity, innovation, quality of construction and performance. The web reports will be used in judging the projects and will also be graded for quality and information content.

Presentation: Each Student will present, test and demonstrate their contribution to the design. As part of the subtasks, they will also present and demonstrate the design at an organized competition or conference. For example, most designs will be entered into the ECE Senior Design Day competition which is held Friday afternoon of Dead Week, every semester.

Specific Outcomes:

The students will develop skills in software and hardware design, presentation and group interaction.

Grading Policy:

  • Sub Tasks: 25% (There will be 9 to 11 subtasks depending on time constraints)
  • Project and Demonstration of Operation (25%)
  • Performance Analysis and Measurement (25%)
  • Final Report (25%)

References:

  1. Design references will be announced in class.

Equipment Required: Each student will be required to provide their own tools which may include a breadboard and basic hand tools (screwdriver, long nose pliers, wire stripper). Access to laboratory equipment will be provided.

Infrastructure Required: The students will be required to obtain computer accounts to enable them to post a web page (sac account), communicate with email (probably ewl), and read web pages. Communications to the students will be done by the EE499 web page, email and during class of office hours.
