(Last Update June 11, 1997)
The Millennium Falcon is an interesting object to scan. The material is cast iron and is
assembled from several sub units. The unit scanned and displayed in this update is the top
unit. You will note holes in the unit where the top gun and directional antenna were inserted.
Stay tuned to this web page because we will probably assemble the complete unit as well as
form a gif movie segment of the object.
Figure 1: Distant angled view with triangle fill, intensity mapping and teleconcentric
compensation. The original scan had surface regions closer to the camera than the focal
plane. Thus, the magnification was higher so after the compensation there were gaps
between adjacent scan frames. Can you see where these regions were zipped back
together?
Figure 2: Same as Figure 1 but with no triangle fill. The vertices were joined with lines but in
this case it did not make much difference since the original scan contained over 500,000
sample points.
Figure 3: Close up view of surface with no triangle fill. Sample points are joined with lines and have original intensity map shading.
Figure 4: Same as Figure 3 but with triangle fill. There is a "crack" along the surface which
is really a bug in our home brew software. We have long since fixed the software but we
only update these web pages each summer, so it may seem like a Millennium before the
figure is replaced.
