The GX270 is based on the i865G chipset which uses ICH5 for audio. ICH5 is currently not supported in kernel version 2.4.21, although it is backwards compatible with ICH4, which is supported. The patch above hacks in support for ICH5 audio in linux 2.4.21 (and adds names for the PCI device IDs).
I have heard reports on the lkml that this patch does not work with all ICH5/codec combinations. Since it works on my Dell Optiplex GX270 I would expect it to work with other Dells, especially GX270's. I make no guarantees. YMMV.
