Women In Engineering
Retention Programs
Advising
Academic advising on college and university requirements, and referrals
to other campus programs is provided as needed. We are available as
a sounding board to bounce off ideas, or to provide an attentive ear.
Electronic Communication
All women engineering students are automatically included on a computer
listserve which provides a quick and easy way to disseminate information
on college news and events.
WIE Welcome Retreat
New female students spend an afternoon "discovering engineering" before
classes begin, talk with other female students, meet the Colleges
women faculty, administrators, and support staff, and have lots of
fun!
E-Mentoring Opportunities
"MentorNet®", the national electronic industrial mentoring
network for women in engineering and science, offers UK undergraduate
students the opportunity to be paired with female or male engineers
across the country. Mentors offer support and encouragement to students
as they progress through their coursework, and prepare to embark on
their professional careers. For more information about "MentorNet®",
visit the web site at: www.mentornet.net.
Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
Women enrolled in engineering are strongly encouraged to join the
student chapter of the National Society of Women Engineers. Members
of SWE participate in a variety of activities to inform others about
engineering, to recruit students to UK, to help students develop professionally,
and to support their peers. Membership offers opportunities in developing
friendships, networks, leadership skills, community contacts, and exposure
to industry. Students receive a subscription to SWE Magazine with membership.
Residential Hall for Women in Engineering
The "WIE WING" is located on the first floor of Blanding
III on South Campus. The purpose of this special community of female
engineering majors is to provide them with a supportive environment
that offers opportunities for formal and informal interactions with
faculty members and engineering advisors. Students have an opportunity
to join study groups, take classes together and participate in activities
designed to enhance learning and exploration of career opportunities.
New this Fall 2001, is the "Engineer in Residence" program.
Students living in Blanding III will have the opportunity to interact
with an engineering graduate from the College of Engineering now employed
at Lexmark in Lexington. Evening programs are offered to support and
encourage engineering majors.
