Solar Car Visits Bell County School

Imagine driving across the country, and never having to fill up on gas.

That’s exactly what a group of engineers at UK did, and Friday, they showed their solar car off to Bell County school kids.

The group competed last year in a race against other colleges, using their car that is powered by sunlight.

One of the engineers is from Bell County.

UK Solar Car Teams Races Across The Country

This is the only solar car in Kentucky, Gato Del Sol III. It runs exclusively on solar energy and will be competing against other prestigious engineering universities in the 2008 North American Solar Challenge.

The challenge consists of a 2,400 mile race beginning in Texas and ending in Canada during the month of July. The team is currently making their way through Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Inclement weather has been concern as storms have popped up along their route. Fortunately they have had ample sunshine during the morning hours to fully charge Gato Del Sol III.

UK Solar Car Will Compete In National Race

University of Kentucky's Solar Car Team has developed a car, Gato Del Sol III, that runs exclusively on solar energy. The car boasts of 474 individual solar panels

The team, comprised of students, plans to compete against other engineering universities in the 2008 North American Solar Challenge this July.

The challenge consists of a 2,400 mile race. It begins in Texas, with six checkpoints along the 10 day journey. They hope to compete the race at the final checkpoint in Calgary, Canada.
