Solar Car Fights Obstacles

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 21, 2008) ? The University of Kentucky Solar Car Team set out today from Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 10th place in the North American Solar Car Challenge.

But the UK College of Engineering team, headed by student Matt Hatfield, remains confident it will meet its goal of finishing the race in Calgary, Alberta, later this week.

The team made it into Winnipeg with a time of 66 hours, 55 minutes and 55 seconds since it left Plano, Texas, on July 13. However, this weekend threw some major challenges in the path of "Gato del Sol III," the UK solar car.

Solar Car Crosses Calgary Finish Line

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 23, 2008) ? The University of Kentucky’s Solar Car Team completed the North American Solar Car Challenge Tuesday by reaching the race’s finish line in Calgary, Alberta.

"Gato del Sol III," the UK solar car, ended the race in 11th place, thereby achieving the team’s dual goals: qualifying for the race by passing a rigorous, multi-issue inspection, and traveling the entire 2,400-mile course from Plano, Texas, to Calgary.

Solar Car Should Finish Today

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 22, 2008) ? "Gato del Sol III," the University of Kentucky’s solar car, was expected to complete the North American Solar Car Challenge by crossing the finish line in Calgary, Alberta, today.

The completion of the race achieves the dual goals the UK College of Engineering Solar Car Team had set for itself this year: to qualify for the race during inspections in Plano, Texas, and to make it all the way through the 2,400-mile course.

The team’s blog provides an update through Monday night.

Weather Not Hindering Solar Car

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 17, 2008) ? Unfavorable weather conditions aren’t stopping the University of Kentucky Solar Car Team as "Gato del Sol III" continues its northward trek toward Calgary, Alberta.

Team spokesman Matt Hatfield reports this morning that the car is traveling apace toward Sioux Falls, S.D., after the team spent Wednesday night "in the middle of nowhere near Decatur, Neb."

"We’re still battling clouds and bad weather. It’s been raining and cloudy with very little sun" through most of the race that began Sunday in Plano, Texas, Hatfield said.

Solar Car Team Zooms Toward Calgary

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 16, 2008) ? "Gato del Sol III," the University of Kentucky’s solar car, is continuing its trek toward Calgary, Alberta, in Day Four of the North American Solar Challenge.

The experimental car, built and driven by a team of students from the UK College of Engineering, currently is in ninth place as it begins the day’s travel from Topeka, Kan., to Omaha, Neb.

More information about the race and Gato del Sol III’s progress is available at the team’s blog here and at the North American Solar Challenge’s Web site.

UK Solar Car Makes Cut for Race

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 11, 2008) ? The University of Kentucky’s Solar Car Team made the cut Thursday and will be among at least eight cars that will race from Plano, Texas, to Calgary, Alberta, beginning Sunday at 9 a.m. (CDT).

The UK College of Engineering student team received approval of its car, "Gato Del Sol III," following inspections by officials of the 2008 Solar Car Challenge in Plano. The inspections looked at each entry’s array of solar panels, body and sizing, driver, battery protection, electrical system, mechanical system, dynamic and support.
