The UK Solar Car team is currently green on 6 out the 10 requirements for the race in July. All that is left is final approval of the design report, team data, and road fee. See the link below for more details.

Things are really starting to move along at the DV Terrell garage as we get our new batteries and battery management system put together. Big thanks go out to Student Government for providing the funds for batteries and many people that have helped us get our registration materials to the Innovators Education Foundation.

  • Great News from the Officials of the Amercian Solar Challenge!

We found out late Friday night that we will be able to race as an official participant in the 2012 American Solar Challenge using a modified GaAs array. A rule change put us in doubt about whether or not we would be in the demonstration class, but the officials gave us a big break by allowing us to scale down the array size. We will continue working will them to decide exactly how much of the array will need to be unwired, but a big hurdle has been clear for the UK Solar Car Team. A big thanks to Jimmy Frilling for heading up this effort to get us in the race.

  • Saturday Race Finish at IMS

    05/08/2011 - 19:32 posted by Stevo

Gato del Sol IV raced almost flawlessly on Saturday. The weather was somewhat cloudy, but we managed to keep the car on the track almost the entire day. We finished the day with 125 laps, which is more than we expected based on the weather and our limited battery pack. Our total lap count for the race was 317, which left us in 5th place out of 10 qualified teams. First, second, and third place were taken by the University of Minnesota, Illinois State University, and Northwestern University, respectively. We would also like to mention and congratulate Michigan State, who with just a 5-member team were able to qualify for the first time in their team's history and placed behind us in 6th place with 207 laps. It was a very fun yet stressful week for all of the teams, and we look forward to seeing all of them next year at the American Solar Challenge 2012.
On the topic of next year, for our team to race competitively again, we will have to build another (or modify our current) solar array. The race regulations for next year require arrays to have less power. This change was enacted by race organizers in order to make solar racing more welcoming and competitive for the teams that have limited resources, and also so that teams will focus more on efficiency and reliability of their cars as entire systems rather than focusing on getting the most powerful arrays possible. Additionally, our team will have to design and construct a new battery pack, as our previous pack is in bad shape and needs a safer modular design in order to keep the cells contained and charge-balanced. Thus, our team will be working hard over the summer to continue fundraising/sponsorship efforts as we look to get new parts and materials for at least these two systems of Gato del Sol.

  • Thursday and Friday Racing

The team just got back to the hotel after completing a second day of racing. We have experienced some battery-related electrical issues over the first two days of the race, as our well-used pack has begun to show its age. We ended up bypassing two of the bad battery modules and replacing another one, incurring a 17-minute penalty. However, our battery pack now appears to be well-balanced and ready to race for tomorrow. Otherwise, our car has been fantastic. We are certainly the fastest car on the track when we can keep the battery pack running. The weather forecast for tomorrow does not look favorable, but we should be able to keep a slow and steady pace throughout the day. Saturday is Emerging Tech Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, so feel free to come on out if you're in the area and see us race! • Tuesday from IMS - Qualified for FSGP 2011!

    05/05/2011 - 13:55 posted by Stevo

We're in! On Tuesday, the team did a lot of hard work and finally got qualified to race around 6:15. There were a few minor issues, such as the parking brake strength and turn signal visibility, but we were able to pass and get the green light to race in every category. The new belly pan has come along quite nicely, as Kyle S. and Zach H. were able to finish installing the flaps so that our wheels can turn inside the fairings. After qualifying, we did a little more polishing up of the car and got back to the hotel a little early. Keep checking out our twitter page (http://twitter.com/uksolarcar) for more frequent updates with pictures and videos from the race! ooooooh C-A-T-S Cats! Cats! Cats!

After arriving at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway yesterday around 6pm, the team has been hard at work last night and this morning getting the car prepared for scrutineering and testing. While the electrical systems are looking great so far, we still have a few things to fix/add/debug before the scrutineers OK us for dynamic testing and racing. Mechanically, we are still getting the wheel fairings worked out, along with a ventilation duct for our battery pack. Overall, things are looking good, with the exception of the cloudy sky.
