Program Overview
The Master of Engineering degree requires 30 credit hours of graduate course
work. Each student develops an individualized program of study based upon
her/his interest. A total of 18 credit hours of work is taken in the student's
chosen area of concentration. This area of concentration corresponds with
the student's personal engineering career objectives. The student takes
an additional 12 credit hours of supportive elective course work which complements
the area of concentration. Elective course work may be selected from mathematics,
economics, business administration, management, or other related disciplines.
Detailed information on course offerings and sequencing is available upon
request. At least one-half of the 30 hours required must be at the 600-level
or above.
Students may utilize any graduate course offered by the University of
Kentucky, or by other recognized graduate degree-granting institutions,
providing the course(s): (1) meet program requirements, (2) are approved
by the student's advisory committee, and (3) are taken in graduate status.
Students may transfer a total of nine credit hours of approved graduate
work from another UK graduate degree program, from other universities,
or courses taken as a post-baccalaureate student, to their Master of Engineering
program.
Each student is assigned a professor to serve as her or his advisor and
who, with two or more additional faculty, constitutes the student's advisory
committee. Graduate students enrolled in each of the five areas of program
concentration will be exposed to at least 10 faculty members from as many
as four academic departments. The University of Kentucky faculty are internationally
renowned teachers and researchers. Over ninety-eight percent of the faculty
in the College of Engineering hold a Ph.D. in their respective disciplines.
Courses in five program areas of concentration are offered:
- Environmental Engineering (subject to enrollment minimum)
- Manufacturing Systems Design (subject to enrollment minimum)
- Advanced Processing Control (suspended)
- Electronics and Process Control (suspended)
- Mining Engineering (suspended)
Before enrolling in an extended-campus engineering course, applicants
must gain admission (regular, provisional, or post-baccalaureate) to the
University of Kentucky Graduate School.United States citizens or U.S.
permanent residents must complete the following admission requirements:
- Submit a completed application for admission to the UK Graduate School.
Distance
Learning Programs will coordinate the process for Distance Learning
students.
- Obtain a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET-
accredited institution
- Present a minimum undergraduate grade point average on all undergraduate
course work of 2.75 based on a 4.0 scale.
- Send two official transcripts from each college or university previously
attended.
- Submit a minimum score of 1000 on the combined verbal and quantitative
sections of the Graduate Record Examination (must be satisfied before
completing nine credit hours of graduate work).
- Pay the required Graduate School applicants fee of $30 for domestic
applicants.
All requested admission material should be sent to:
Note: Applicants with an undergraduate degree in a field other than engineering
or from a non-ABET accredited engineering program will be required to
complete a set of prerequisite courses ( or their equivalents ) in an
engineering discipline prior to admission to the program with full graduate
standing. The Master of Engineering Director of Graduate Studies will
determine which prerequisite courses are required on an individual basis.
