Margaret Ingels Society of Women Engineers
Graduate Fellowship
2005-2006
The Student Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers at the University of Kentucky has in agreement with the College of Engineering and the University of Kentucky established an endowed Fellowship Fund in memory of Margaret Ingels, the first female engineering graduate of the University of Kentucky. She received her bachelor of science in mechanical engineering in 1916. The endowment will provide a $2500 fellowship to students accepted for admission to a graduate program in Biomedical Engineering, Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering, or all other Engineering disciplines. The fellowship will be awarded for one year of graduate study at UK and is non-renewable for subsequent years. Preference will be given to students entering the first year of a graduate program and to female applicants who are underrepresented.
Criteria for Eligibility
- Candidates must be either applying for enrollment to the first or second year of graduate study in one of the engineering programs identified above in the 2005 Fall Semester.
- Candidates must have an undergraduate grade point average of 3.2 or above.
- Candidates must have a graduate grade point average of 3.5 or above on any previous graduate work.
- Candidates must have achieved the 81st percentile or higher on either the verbal or quantitative portion of the GRE.
- New students applying to a program whose most recent degree is from a college or university outside the U.S. are not eligible.
- Candidates cannot be currently enrolled in one University of Kentucky graduate program with the intent of entering a new program and holding simultaneous enrollment in both.
Nomination Process
Candidates for the Margaret Ingels Society of Women Engineers Fellowship must be accepted to a graduate degree program. The applicant can be self-nominated or nominated by the program's director of graduate studies.
In the following order, nominations must include:
- A completed fellowship nomination form specific to the Margaret Ingels Society of Women Engineers Graduate Fellowship (included in nomination materials sent to DGS);
- Photocopy of transcripts from all schools attended, both undergraduate and graduate;
- Photocopy of official GRE General Test Scores;
- Photocopy of application submitted for admission to a graduate program at UK identified above;
- Photocopy of letter of acceptance to a graduate program at UK identified above (if such is already available);
- A letter of nomination or endorsement from the director of graduate studies;
- Two letters of recommendation that may include those submitted for admission to the Graduate School;
- Resume (not to exceed two pages);
- Statement of Purpose (not to exceed three pages) relating to (a) career goals and objectives and interest in pursuing a graduate degree, (b) evidence of demonstrated participation and leadership in serving the University or community, (c) commitment to the mission of the Society of Women Engineers "To stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, to expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and to demonstrate the value of diversity."
Selection Process
Ranking of the candidates and alternates for this fellowship will be determined on the basis of the criteria set forth above by a committee appointed by the dean of the College of Engineering that shall include the director of the Women in Engineering Program and the faculty advisor and the counselor for the UK student section of the Society of Women Engineers. Applications which do not comply with the above guidelines will not be considered.
Due Date for Nominations
Nominations with all appropriate documentation must reach the Women in Engineering Office, 379 Ralph G Anderson Building, no later than Monday, February 28, 2005.
