Margaret Ingels Society of Women Engineers Graduate Fellowship

The Student Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers at the University of Kentucky has in agreement with the College of Engineering and the University of Kentucky established an endowed Fellowship Fund in memory of Margaret Ingels, the first female engineering graduate of the University of Kentucky. She received her bachelor of science in mechanical engineering in 1916.

Criteria for Eligibility

  • Amount of fellowship to be determined
  • Recipient must have been accepted to and maintain full-time enrollment in a MS or Ph.D. program in an engineering discipline
  • Recipient must have demonstrated participation and leadership in student organizations, societies and activities as an undergraduate
  • So long as women are underrepresented in the College of Engineering graduate program, preference shall be given to women students

Nomination Process

In the following order, nominations must include:

A completed fellowship nomination form specific to the Margaret Ingels Society of Women Engineers Graduate Fellowship (included in nomination materials sent to DGS);

Photocopy of transcripts from all schools attended, both undergraduate and graduate;

Photocopy of official GRE General Test Scores;

Photocopy of application submitted for admission to a graduate program at UK identified above;

Photocopy of letter of acceptance to a graduate program at UK identified above (if such is already available);

A letter of nomination or endorsement from the director of graduate studies;

Two letters of recommendation that may include those submitted for admission to the Graduate School;

Resume (not to exceed two pages);

Statement of Purpose (not to exceed three pages) relating to (a) career goals and objectives and interest in pursuing a graduate degree, (b) evidence of demonstrated participation and leadership in serving the University or community, (c) commitment to the mission of the Society of Women Engineers “To stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, to expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and to demonstrate the value of diversity.”

Selection Process

Ranking of the candidates and alternates for this fellowship will be determined on the basis of the criteria set forth above by a committee appointed by the dean of the College of Engineering that shall include the director of the Women in Engineering Program and the faculty advisor and the counselor for the UK student section of the Society of Women Engineers. Applications which do not comply with the above guidelines will not be considered.
