Background: A CQI team for Research was formed a number of years ago. That team met one time. It consisted of all Engineering center directors as well as a representative from each department. A new group focusing on the research needs in the College and consisting of the same member make-up is being reconstituted.

President Todd has indicated that the College of Engineering should double its research funding by the year 2010 to $40 million. To do this, the College must address a number of issues and develop the necessary internal infrastructure to support a research endeavor of this magnitude.

  •  ASEE Funding Areas

  Dr. Grulke recently attended the ASEE Engineering Research Council meeting in Washington, DC.   Presentations made by the various DoD, NSF, NIH and other funding agency representatives at that meeting are posted on the COE RGS web site at: www.engr.uky.edu/research/presentations/index.html .

  •  Sponsored Project Development

  Margot McCullers, Sponsored Project Development, presented a list of possible topics she could talk about in-depth to the COE faculty on proposal development.   The group agreed they would like to see a demonstration of searchable databases, in particular, searching for broad agency announcements and request for proposals.

  •  Sponsored Projects Administration

  Debbie Davis, Sponsored Projects Administration, spoke with the group regarding possible presentations related to grants administration. There was consensus among the group about the need to automate the budget development process.   Dr. Gedney asked that general templates be placed on the web for use in preparing and calculating proposal budgets.   Debbie will look into this issue.
