The goal is to provide an overview for professionals who need a basic understanding, as well as those seeking a foundation for deeper exploration of smart grid technology. This class begins with an introduction to the basics of power transmission and distribution systems, focusing on smart grids. Attendees will gain an understanding of the key enabling technologies including SCADA, PMU, wide area monitoring and protection, and distribution system technologies such as smart metering, integrated voltage and var optimization. Topics will also include power market structure, real time pricing, and the economic aspects of power systems. No previous knowledge of power systems is required.

Earn PDH and CEU

Attendees will earn 7 Professional Development Hours (PDH) for participating in this course.  Upon request attendees can earn .75 Continuing Education Units (CEU).

Cancellation and Substitution Policy

If you cannot attend after registering, you may designate a substitute attendee. A full refund will be provided for cancellations received by October 15th. Cancellations after this date will be subject to a $50 administration fee.

Location and Parking

On campus parking for attendees will be provided in Parking Structure #5 free of charge. Directions and other information will be provided to registrants.

Accommodations

While the Institute doesn’t endorse any particular establishment, the Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites, 1000 Export Ave. is actually adjacent to campus and within walking distance of the Student Center. Of course there are numerous accommodations available in Lexington and any located in downtown Lexington are also close to the university.

About the instructor

Dr. Yuan Liao, currently an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Kentucky, is also the associate director for the graduate program of the Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky. Dr. Liao obtained his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Texas A& M University, College Station, Texas in 2000. Before joining the university in 2005 he was employed by the Corporate Research Center of ABB Inc., Raleigh, North Carolina where he worked first as a consulting R&D engineer and then as principal consulting R&D engineer. His research interests focus on the various aspects of power systems.
