The Society of Women Engineers Student Outreach ProgramHow about Engineering?The local section of the Society of Women Engineers has developed an outreach program to educate students about the engineering field. The facilitators of the programs are either working engineers from local corporations such as TVA and USEC, or are students and professors from the University of Kentucky. There are two programs that are offered, depending on the grade level of the students, and details are given below. Program A: Presentation and Demonstration Format Recommended for Grades 1-8 At least one facilitator will perform a presentation/demonstration using the following format: Color slide show answering:
Followed by a demonstration (e.g. paper structures, electricity, making a polymer). Good format for:
Program B: Presentation and Panel Format Recommended for Grades 9-12 Allocate minimum/maximum time of 30-45 minutes (5-10 slide for introduction, 15-20 minutes for panel, 10-15 minutes for question and answer). Panel made up of at least 3 participants with at least 1 student participant. Includes introduction of engineering followed by personal accounts of engineering experiences / recommendations by panel members. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions.
