UK Chemical Engineering Students and AIChE Student Chapters Recognized for Outstanding Achievements at AIChE Annual Meeting

The University of Kentucky American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) student chapters recently attended the AIChE Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA (October 27 – November 2). Thirty undergraduates from Lexington attended this meeting and participated in a wide variety of conference events. Sixteen students representing the Paducah chapter also attended.

Paducah Professor Publishes Book in China

University of Kentucky engineering professor Jim Smart has published his first book, “Engineering Fluid Mechanics” in China. Smart teaches at the UK College of Engineering Paducah Campus. He collaborated with three Chinese professors at the Chinese University of Mining and Technology in Xuzhou, China (40,000 students). It is a 300-page undergraduate textbook dealing with fluid flow and the principles of fluid dynamics. “There is a real need for this book in China,” Smart said in a statement. “Chinese students learn English language in grade school, but are not exposed to technical English. This book is a bilingual book, to help students learn engineering as well as command of technical English.” Smart made the connection to China through the UK international student exchange program, where students are sent to China for a year of study and vice versa. He made two trips to China and the Chinese authors also came to the U.S., as they worked together on the book. Smart taught several classes at the Chinese university. “We have been going back and forth to each other’s countries and trading a lot of e-mails over the past couple of years.

Smart was the first faculty member recruited in 1998 for the then-new UK extended campus engineering school in Paducah. He was recruited from the University of Texas, where he was teaching after spending more than 20 years working in the private sector for such companies as IBM, Ashland Chemical and Great Lakes Chemical. He moved to Paducah with his wife, who is the owner/operator of BeBe’s Artisan Market in downtown Paducah.

Paducah CME Student Wins Regional Research Award

Wesley Whipple, Junior Chemical and Materials Engineering student at the Paducah Extended Campus was awarded the Undergraduate Research Poster Award in Chemistry at the 2011 Math, Engineering and Science Conference (MESCON) held on the campus of the University of Evansville for his contribution titled, “Production of Biodiesel and Analysis of Related Interfacial Phenomena”. Wesley is mentored by Dr. Jeffrey Seay, Assistant Professor of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the Paducah Extended Campus.

Paducah Competes in Baja Challenge

The UK Paducah Baja team competed in the 2010 Baja SAE Rochester Wet World Challenge at the Rochester Institute of Technology from June 11-13. The team finished 40th overall out of 92 registered teams with a 24th place finish in Suspension and Traction and 36th place finish in the endurance race.

College of Engineering Students Present at Symposium in China

Chemical and materials engineering students Luke Richardson from the Paducah campus and Andrea Ramsey from the Lexington campus traveled to Hangzhou, China with Dr. Jeffrey Seay to attend the Second International Symposium of Sustainable Chemical Product and Process Engineering. Both students participated at the conference by presenting posters detailing the results of their undergraduate research projects. Ramsey won the Best Undergraduate Research Award for the student poster competition. Her research, “Development of Multidisciplinary Region Specific Economic Models for Integrated Biorefining” was co-authored with Sumesh Sukumara and supervised by Dr. Jeffrey Seay.

Paducah Faculty Member Receives Education Award

Dr. Y. Charles Lu, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at UK’s Paducah campus, has been selected as a 2010 SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award recipient. The SAE Teetor Program stimulates contacts between younger engineering educators and practicing engineers in industry and government.

Established in 1953, this award is administered by the Teetor Educational Award Committee and consists of a framed certificate, a trip to a major SAE meeting, and two years of SAE membership. The award is presented at either the Awards Ceremony during the SAE World Congress or at a major SAE aerospace meeting.
