BIG BLUE is a flight experiment developed, designed, built and flown by primarily undergraduate students in the College of Engineering at the University of Kentucky. It was conceived as a demonstration of unique technologies potential for application for Mars exploration. The BIG BLUE project provides hands on learning for engineering students at the University of Kentucky, as well as for K-12 students from across the state. Members of the BIG BLUE team are involved in community activities intended to promote aerospace and the discovery of flight to many students. This project is sponsored by the NASA Workforce Development Program via the Kentucky Space Grant Consortium.
Kentucky Electronics Education Project (KEEP)

The Kentucky Electronics Education Project (KEEP) uses microelectronics as a theme in developing math, science, and technology curriculum materials drawing on the breadth of content encompassed by microelectronics and the prevalence of electronics in everyday life. KEEP involves curriculum development, teacher workshops, and classroom activities initiated by the educational outreach aspects of two NSF research grants. The emphasis of KEEP is not vocational training; rather it is the use of a real world example as a theme to integrate basic principles from different disciplines. Lesson plans related to circuit building activities connect the process steps to National Math, Science, and Technology Standards. Assessment tools are under development to formalize the educational impact of the hands-on projects. Currently, teachers trained through summer workshops are implementing KEEP into their science classes, utilizing new student assessment tools, and providing pre- and post-evaluations.
Kentucky Satellite Project (KySat)

Kentucky Satellite Project, a joint enterprise to design, build, launch and operate small satellites for education, research and economic innovation purposes. The primary mission of KySat is to train students in the dynamics of spacecraft design, construction, launch and operation and to support accompanying education and research applications. KySat is a Pico class cube-shaped satellite with a mass of less than one kilogram. Once in orbit, KySat will be made available at no cost to Kentucky students, teachers, schools, and universities for educational and research uses, which include communications capability, temperature monitoring, current, voltage and science sensors, and photography using an onboard camera. In addition to UK, the KySat partnership is comprised of lead institutions Morehead State University, Murray State University, University of Louisville, Western Kentucky University, Kentucky Space Grant Consortium, Council on Postsecondary Education, Kentucky Science and Engineering Foundation and the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation which is the managing partner.

The College of Engineering K-12 Outreach Program provides a bridge for K-12 students, schools and organizations to experience and learn more about the creativity, design, and critical thinking skills that UK engineers use everyday to solve real world challenges. Exciting hands on activities, demonstrations, competitions, and design projects introduce the engineering process and diverse teamwork skills that real engineers and researchers use everyday as they build a better world with cutting edge technology.

The Academic Fair is held at the College of Engineering on the University of Kentucky’s campus in October, and it provides high school and transfer students, who are interested in engineering, information on admissions, financial aid, housing and scholarship information. It also gives the students a chance to see the College of Engineering facilities and programs and the exciting opportunities of an engineering career.

TEAMS is a national high school engineering competition that includes real-world engineering challenges in a fun and fast-paced environment that inspires creativity, teamwork, critical thinking and peer-to-peer cooperation. This is open to students in grades 9-12. The competition is a one-day, two-part academic competition that incorporates several academic areas. The experience is designed to introduce students to an “engineering team” work environment. Students can compete for local, state, and national awards and recognition. The University of Kentucky’s College of Engineering will be awarding $4000 scholarships to each student on the winning varsity team for the local competition. TEAMS will be held at the University of Kentucky on February 17, 2007. Teams must register before January 15, 2007. TEAMS is affiliated with the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS).

UK BEST is a residential program which provides a pre-engineering curriculum to students who are interested in pursing an engineering degree and who will contribute to the diversity of the educational experience in the College of Engineering. Students will gain pre-engineering academic skills that will prepare them for their junior and senior year of high school, as well as collegiate-level engineering coursework. Course work will engage and challenge students while building pre-calculus math, chemistry, physics, English, engineering design and college leadership skills.

The mission of NSBE is, "To increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers, who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community." The NSBE is committed to promoting engineering and other applied sciences to the revitalization of the African-American community. The NSBE provides educational information to students (K-12) on engineers’ roles in society and career opportunities available to engineers.

The mission of SWE is, “To stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, to expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and to demonstrate the value of diversity.” SWE outreach provides educational information to K-12 students through classroom visits and presentations, activities with the Girl Scouts, and the annual “Women in Engineering” Career Day for high school girls.

Central Kentucky Regional Science and Engineering Fair, Inc. (CKRSEF)

CKRSEF is a science fair for elementary, middle and high school students (4-12) from 33 counties in central Kentucky. The competition is split into three groups: 4th grade, 5th-8th grade, and 9th -12th grade. It is annually held in March at the University of Kentucky. Students projects must concentrate in one of the several categories listed by CKRSEF, including behavioral science, earth and space science, botany, zoology, medicine/health, engineering, environmental, microbiology, chemistry and physics. Winners from the CKRSEF will have the opportunity to compete at the Kentucky State Science and Engineering Fair (KY-SEF) and the overall winners from CKRSEF advance directly to the International Science and Engineering Fair. The CKRSEF is affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and the Discovery programs (Washington, DC).

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an international robotics program giving students, ages 9 to 14, a passion for discovery, science and technology. Students collaborate as a team while being guided by a coach. The students will research and solve a real-world problem based on a theme established by FLL, present their research and solutions and build an autonomous robot using engineering concepts. FLL (Central Kentucky) is an official invitational tourney.

Future Cities Competition is an educational engineering program for 7th and 8th grade students. It gives students a chance to present their vision of the city of the future with “hands on” applications utilizing engineering principles and challenges. This is a team competition that involves problem-solving, team work, research and presentation skills, practical math and science applications, and computer skills. The goals of Future Cities Competition is to foster engineering skills, inform the community about the engineering profession, and inspire students to explore future concepts and careers in engineering. This event is associated with the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).

On March 24, 2007, over 300 middle school students will attend GEMS each spring on the UK Campus as part of the Kentucky Girl Scout experience. GEMS is a chance for girls to explore and learn with “hands on” experiments the scientific method, science in daily life, how math and science are connected, and careers in science. Girls will be exposed to careers in engineering, forensics, chemistry, microbiology, medicine and other science-related fields.

Girls in Research is a program that encourages 6th grade girls to pursue careers in research—particularly in drug and alcohol research. This is a three year program that includes a week long camp every June for three years at the University of Kentucky, mentoring relationships, and five Saturday Academies each year at participants’ local community colleges. All expenses are paid, and participants will be given a $100 stipend after completing each summer session, and a $1000 stipend after completing the three year program to be used for any college the participants wished to attend. Teachers and parents will also have the opportunity to participate in a series of workshops. Teachers also receive a two-day training each summer for three years in science, research, and gender equity, and they are given a $300 stipend. All expenses are paid for the teachers as well.

This fair is the next step for the winners of the individual school fairs in the District for students in grades four through twelve. Award winning students from this level proceed to the Regional Science Fair held at UK. There are numerous categories in which a student may have a project entered such as Physics, Engineering, Botany, Behavioral Science, Chemistry, Zoology and so on. The District fair is Saturday, February 10th at the new Bryan Station High School.

MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory. Teachers and volunteers are given materials at the beginning of the school year, and these materials are used to coach student “Mathletes,” in a class-setting or as an extracurricular activity. After several months of coaching, participating schools select students to compete individually or as part of a team in a written and oral competition held at a local level in February with winners progressing to the state competition in March. At the state level, the top four individuals and the top coach will be sent to represent the state in the national finals. This program is affiliated with the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). The local chapter of NSPE, Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers (KSPE), operates the MATHCOUNTS program in Kentucky.
Manufacturing Academy

The E&AM Academy was developed by the Center for Quality People and Organizations (CQPO) to introduce students to career opportunities in manufacturing while developing competencies that will benefit them in making life choices in whatever career they may pursue. The program consists of school instructors teaching meeting facilitation and problem solving processes during regular class schedule. The Center for Quality People and Organizations (CQPO), a non-profit organization formed through the efforts of the Scott County School System and Toyota Motor Manufacturing, offers an additional 40 hours of training on human relation skills, manufacturing competencies, and advanced problem solving skills. The University of Kentucky College of Engineering, Center for Manufacturing, the Kentucky Community & Technical College System, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, and other local industries are providing on-site presentations for students to learn different types of career opportunities. Students will be asked to demonstrate what they have learned by participating in both individual and team exercises.

The Rogers Scholars Program is an intensive one week summer session for rising high school juniors from 42 counties in Southern and Eastern Kentucky that emphasizes technological skills development and fosters an entrepreneurial spirit, leadership and commitment to rural Kentucky. Rogers Scholars will interact with state and national leaders and work with high-quality instructors. All Rogers Scholars activities such as meals, lodging, etc. will be supervised and paid by the Rogers Scholars program.

Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) is a project-based program that empowers students in all grade levels (P-16) to use technology to learn and achieve. STLP’s mission is to advance individual capabilities, to motivate all students, and to create leadership opportunities through the use of technology. Students develop projects that fall into one of four categories—instructional, community, technical, and entrepreneurial. These are created to benefit the school and community while meeting STLP goals. Students may have a chance to be involved in a District Technology Showcase, District Art Shows, District Video Festival, Summer Camps and the opportunity to win District STLP Awards.
