Freshmen arrive at the College of Engineering

Date - August 28, 2009

The University of Kentucky College of Engineering welcomed 546 freshmen to campus Wednesday for the beginning of the fall semester. The 2009 incoming class is the largest freshman class in at least the past 10 years and one of the largest in the College of Engineering’s history.

“This is certainly the highest quality incoming class we’ve ever had,” said Dr. Rick Sweigard, associate dean for administration and academic affairs. The freshman class’s average math ACT score is 28.8 and its average ACT composite score is 27.5.

“This is the first year that we’ve had dedicated recruiters on the College of Engineering staff, and it’s clear that they have really paid off for us,” Sweigard said.

The 2009 freshmen class contains 470 men and 76 women, 18 African American students, 14 Asian students and seven Hispanic students.

The class will face many challenges as the United States deals with security, energy, environmental and infrastructure issues in the years ahead. “We will need people like this incoming class who are intelligent and well-qualified to address these challenges in the future,” Sweigard said.
