Robert R. Dawson Jr.
received a Construction Management Founders Society Lifetime Achievement
Award.
Robert R. (Bob) Dawson, Jr.
was born the son of Robert Randall and Nancy Clark Dawson in Louisville,
Ky. on October 11, 1943. He has a younger brother, Tom Dawson and a
younger stepbrother, Dan Martin. Bob attended Bloomfield Elementary
School in Bloomfield, Ky., where the family lived and graduated from
Kentucky Military Institute in Louisville.
In 1962, Mr. Dawson began his college education at the University of
Kentucky. During the summers of both high school and college he worked
for R.R. Dawson Bridge Company in the state of Kentucky. He graduated
in 1966 with a B.S. degree from the College of Commerce.
In 1967, he joined the Marine Corps Reserve and was allowed visitation
to Parris Island. In 1969, he went to work again for R.R. Dawson Bridge
Company in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1972, his daughter Nancy was born
in Montgomery, Ala. and at his father’s request he relocated back to
Kentucky.
Mr. Dawson Sr. passed away in 1983 and the partnership of R.R. Dawson
Bridge Company is now composed of Bob and his two brothers. There is
an Atlantic Division and a Gulf Division and Bob has responsibility
for the latter, which works in the gulf states of the southeast. Since
1966, the Gulf Division has done most of its work in Alabama where they
have completed over $1.2 billion worth of work stated in 2007 dollars.
They were involved with the rebuilding of the downtown interstate system
in Atlanta and the reconstruction of the CSX railroad bridges in Mississippi
after hurricane Katrina.
Bob has served on the Board of Directors of National City Bank in Louisville
and Lexington, Kentucky, Association of Highway Contractors (past President),
Alabama Road Builders Association (past President), Kentuckians for
Better Transportation (past Chairman), the Road Information Program
(Secretary-Treasurer), Associated General Contractors of America (National
Highway Bridge Committee-past Chairman), the Lexington-Fayette Urban
County Airport, the Lexington School and Transylvania University.
Bob and his wife Sarah live in Lexington. His daughter, Nancy Jones,
lives and teaches in Athens, Georgia and his stepson, P.R. Gerrow, runs
an equine training facility in Woodford County, Kentucky. Bob and Sarah
have only three hobbies: spending as much time as possible in Florida,
horse racing at Keeneland, and participating in sport car racing. Both
Sarah and Bob are certified national instructors for Porsche Club of
America.
