Accredited
by ABET, Paducah programs poised for growth
12/3/2003
The mechanical engineering
and chemical engineering programs on the College of Engineering extended
campus in Paducah recently received accreditation from ABET, the Accreditation
Board for Engineering and Technology. The finding came after ABET's
first program visit.
An enthusiastic faculty with
a strong dedication to teaching is among the strengths of the Paducah
program, ABET representatives noted in their final statement. They also
cited the cooperation among UK , Murray State University and West Kentucky
Community and Technical College , saying it appeared to be "working
smoothly in spite of the complexity of the issues that occur with such
an arrangement."
Sixteen students graduated
from the two programs in the last year; 21 more are expected to graduate
this year.
"The College is proud to have two new ABET-accredited
engineering programs in Western Kentucky , the first-ever chemical engineering
and mechanical engineering programs in Kentucky west of Louisville ,"
said Dean Thomas Lester of the UK College of Engineering. "Thanks to
the work of our dedicated faculty, staff, students, and industry partners,
not only in the Purchase Region, but also in Lexington and throughout
the University community, this bold experiment, which brought together
three Kentucky institutions, has been a tremendous success."
