George M. Woolwine
received a Civil Engineering Career Achievement Award.
George M. Woolwine was born
in Memphis, Tennessee on July 10, 1947, the younger of two children
of Elizabeth Markham and LaFayette McNally Woolwine, Jr. In 1954, the
family moved to Princeton, Ky., where George graduated from Caldwell
County High School (CCHS) in May 1965. In 1963, during George's junior
year at CCHS, he was a member of the football team that defeated Fort
Thomas Highlands for the Class 2A football championship. He was elected
co-captain of the CCHS football team his senior year. George was very
active in the Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle Scout
and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.
George received his BSCE degree from the University of Kentucky in December
1969 and MSCE degree in August 1971. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
His master's thesis was a UK University Research Report entitled
"Measuring the Intangible Values of Natural Streams, Part I --
Application of the Uniqueness Concept" in which Professor John
A. Dearinger served as Principal Investigator. George received his Master
of Business Administration degree from Murray State University in 1984.
In August 1971, George joined
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 3 office in Philadelphia,
Pa. as a project engineer in the Construction Grants Branch. He served
as a federal inspection engineer to the Office of Emergency Preparedness
following Hurricane Agnes in 1972. He also served as the EPA Region
3 coordinator for implementing infiltration and inflow provisions of
Public Law 92-500. George received a Special Achievement Award recognizing
continued superior performance from EPA in 1974.
George joined Howard K. Bell Consulting Engineers, Inc. (HKB) in April
of 1975 as a project engineer in the firm's Lexington office. During
his 20-year career at HKB, he served as project manager and was elected
Vice President responsible for marketing and public relations.
In August 1996, George joined Quest Engineers, Inc., as vice president
responsible for the firm's marketing program. He also has served as
project manager on a variety of environmental projects. George served
as principal-in-charge on the Warren County Regional Facilities Plan,
and on a $3.8 million expansion and upgrade of the Princeton Water Treatment
Plant that utilizes ballasted flocculation technology.
In February 2007 Quest merged
with HDR Engineering, Inc. with offices throughout the U.S. George is
a vice president.
George is a member of the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers
(KSPE). He served in various offices of KSPE and was elected President
in 1992. George is also a member of the American Council of Engineering
Companies of Kentucky, the Kentucky Tennessee Water Environment Association
and the American Water Works Association. He serves as an Advisory Board
member of the Blue Grass Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and is
a member of the Rotary Club of Lexington, serving on the Cardinal Hill
Committee. George served for several years on the Civil Engineering
Industry Advisory Committee.
George married Mary Lynne Hughes in August 1970 while attending UK.
Lynne passed away in April 2007. They have two children, Katie McAllister
and son-in-law JB McAllister, who live in Birmingham, Ala., and Grant
Woolwine and daughter-in-law Marianne, who live in Charlotte, N.C. George
has one granddaughter, Mary Hughes McAllister. George is an Elder at
Second Presbyterian Church, and has served on the Board of Deacons.
