A new university chapter of the Materials Research Society (MRS) was approved for the University of Kentucky on August 12, 2010

MRS, which was founded in 1973, consists of over 15,100 members from the US and also from nearly 70 other countries. At present, MRS boasts almost 50 active University Chapters throughout the US, some located at universities granting Ph.D. degrees; others are based at four-year colleges with strong undergraduate research programs.

The MRS-UK chapter will primarily focus on bringing together all the students and faculties across UK campus who are conducting materials-related research; share and promote materials research and education within UK and in our community; and highlighting the good work in Kentucky locally and globally.

Student members of MRS-UK Chapter (2010-2011) are:

  • Borgohain, Rituraj (President),
  • Deshpande, Rutooj D (Vice President)
  • Li, Juchuan (Secretary)
  • Kaur, Aman (Treasurer)
  • Bing hu
  • Purushothaman, Balaji
  • Sreeramoju, Mahendra K
  • Patil, Nikhil D

Dr. Yang-Tse Cheng, Chemical and Materials Engineering and Dr. Bruce Hinds, Chemical and Materials Engineering, Chemistry will serve as faculty advisors.

MRS has grown to over 15,000 members–from the United States and over 80 other countries.  The Society sponsors two major international annual Meetings encompassing approximately 75 topical symposia, offering symposium tutorials and networking opportunities, and also sponsors numerous single-topic scientific meetings.  The Society recognizes professional and technical excellence and encourages technical interaction among college students through University Chapters, and among materials professionals through regional Sections.  MRS also promotes communication exchange through publication of symposium proceedings, the MRS Bulletin, the Journal of Materials Research, and other publications, databases, and videotapes related to current research activities.  The Society works closely with other materials organizations around the world, and is an Adhering Body of the International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS.)
