A team of department faculty, Thomas Dziubla, assistant professor, Richard Eitel, assistant professor, Kimberly Anderson, professor and J. Zach Hilt, assistant professor were recently awarded a three year DEPSCoR grant from the Office of Naval Research. The project will focus on the development of a new set of analytical tools and materials to study and prevent loss of limb that is associated with the use of tourniquets during critical combat care. Specifically, a new set of antioxidant polymers are being designed to inhibit the oxidative stress damage that occurs in blood vessels as a result of stopping and restarting of blood flow. To test the therapeutic potential of these materials, a microfluidic system that can monitor real time changes in endothelial cells as a result of changes in blood flow will be developed.
