Dr. Nick Stamatiadis Named UK Great Teacher

Dr. Nick Stamatiadis, associate professor of civil engineering, has received the UK Great Teacher Award for 2002. Dr. Stamatiadis is a recognized expert in the field of traffic engineering. He is particularly noted for his studies involving traffic safety, evaluation of crash rates, human factors, driver education and licensing, traffic simulation, highway geometric design and capacity, measures of congestion mitigation, and public transportation.

Dr. Stamatiadis is also a faculty associate member of the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging. He is a licensed professional engineer in Kentucky and Michigan and a licensed surveyor and a civil engineer in Greece and the European Community. He earned a diploma of surveying engineering in 1983 from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece followed by his master’s and doctoral degrees in civil and environmental engineering from Michigan State University. He joined the UK civil engineering faculty in 1990.

He is a member of American Society of Civil Engineers, Institute of Transportation Engineers, Transportation Research Board, Southern Gerontological Society and Chi Epsilon, national civil engineering honor society.

In 2000, the UK student chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers won the Southern District ITE competition largely due to his guidance and assistance as faculty adviser. In addition, Dr. Stamatiadis acts as academic coordinator for the Advanced Transportation Institute of the Kentucky Transportation Center. He also was president of the Kentucky Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers in 2000.

Dr. Stamatiadis is a past recipient of the Chi Epsilon James M. Robbins Excellence in Teaching Award:, Cumberland District and a finalist for the College of Engineering�s Lutes Award: for Excellence in Undergraduate Education.

Celebrating its 41st anniversary, the Great Teacher Award: is UK’s oldest continuous faculty recognition. The Award: is particularly important because all nominations come from UK students. Recipients are chosen by the UK Alumni Association’s Great Teacher Award Committee in cooperation with two student organizations: Omicron Delta Kappa and Mortar Board.

Citations, engraved plaques and individual cash Awards of $2,000 were presented to Dr. Stamatiadis and the five other honorees at a luncheon in recognition of their accomplishments.
