Dr. Richard Sweigard accepts position at University of Memphis

Dr. Richard Sweigard has accepted the position of Dean of Engineering at the University of Memphis with a starting date of June 1, 2013. Dr. Sweigard has provided dedicated service to the department and college as a professor and leader over the past two decades. He served as chair of the department and executive director of the foundation for 14 years. The department’s growth to its current status was initiated by his efforts and your support to develop a recruiting program and to secure support for the scholarship program. Over the past 5 years, he has served the college exceptionally as the Associate Dean for Administration and Academic Affairs.

At the conclusion of the fall 2011 semester, Dr. Kot Unrug will retire from his position as professor and Director of the Rock Mechanics Laboratory in the Department of Mining Engineering.

The growth and transformation of the Department of Mining Engineering has coincided with Dr. Unrug’s tenure. “Since I came here, mining has come to exist as its own department when it was once just a section of civil engineering. We only had three professors and zero resources,” he says. “With commitment and time, we built slowly and now are one of the primary mining engineering programs in the country. That would not have happened without the commitment of people in the industry and the creation of the Mining Engineer Foundation. Both had a monumental impact because they allowed us to have a material base for our work.”

For Dr. Unrug, retirement hardly means inactivity. As an Emeritus professor, he plans to continue working on research projects with Dr. Kyle Perry, who will take over as Director of the Rock Mechanics Laboratory, and enjoy time off for scuba diving, golf, sailing and skiing. “My principle is to play hard or work hard,” he smiles. “Don’t do anything in between!”

More than likely, Dr. Unrug will also take time to reflect on his career as a professor and the many mining engineering students on whom he had an opportunity to put his stamp of influence over the past three decades. “The best reward of teaching is when you see the students you’ve taught doing well in life,” he summarizes. “That’s better than any of the other metrics we use.”

UK Mining Engineering Receives $75,000 in Scholarship Funding

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 23, 2011) — The University of Kentucky Department of Mining Engineering received a donation of over $75,000 from the Friends of Coal-Kentucky program to support Kentucky students pursuing a degree in mining-related fields.

Mining Announces Alliance Chair

The University of Kentucky Department of Mining Engineering recently named Dr.Thomas Novak as the new Alliance Coal Chair in Mining Engineering. The position was established by Alliance Resource Partners, L.P. and Alliance Holdings GP, L.P.

Dr. Andrzej M. Wala, professor, Mining Engineering, received the 2010 Howard L. Hartman Award at the 13^th U.S./North American Mine Ventilation Symposium which was held in Sudbury, Ontario. The award is presented biannually to a recipient elected by the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration Board of Directors.

Mining Engineering Student Receives Award and Scholarship

Mehmet Saracoglu, a doctoral candidate in mining engineering was one of three University of Kentucky students presented with the Viji Jeganathan Award for Cross-Cultural Understanding. The award and $1,000 scholarship applicable toward tuition for the fall 2009 semester was awarded to Saracoglu by the UK Office of International Affairs.
