The University of Kentucky Department of Mining Engineering recently named Dr.Thomas Novak as the new Alliance Coal Chair in Mining Engineering. The position was established by Alliance Resource Partners, L.P. and Alliance Holdings GP, L.P.

Dr. Andrzej M. Wala, professor, Mining Engineering, received the 2010 Howard L. Hartman Award at the 13th U.S./North American Mine Ventilation Symposium which was held in Sudbury, Ontario. The award is presented biannually to a recipient elected by the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration Board of Directors.

Mehmet Saracoglu, a doctoral candidate in mining engineering was one of three University of Kentucky students presented with the Viji Jeganathan Award for Cross-Cultural Understanding. The award and $1,000 scholarship applicable toward tuition for the fall 2009 semester was awarded to Saracoglu by the UK Office of International Affairs.
