The UK ASME Design team from Lexington competed in the ASME Region C Design Competition on April 17, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The challenge was to design a robot that could retrieve small rocks and transport them to a central location. The robot also had to be able to travel over obstacles, simulated by a 4 inch high beam. The team's design was unique, using a design with two drive wheels, each wheel having six spokes, and a skid-tail as the third point (see photo). The drive wheels were independently powered and controlled to allow steering, forward and reverse. The mechanism on the rear of the robot served to scoop up a rock, and then discharge the rock after transport to the designated location. Based on the scoring for the competition, the team placed fifth out of 20 teams, with a score of 6002 points, collecting four out of seven rocks. Schools below our team all received negative scores. Our congratulations to the team for a strong performance! |
