Shaver Engineering Library’s Hall of Deans

Hall of Deans If you were on campus prior to spring semester you might remember a lot of paintings scattered around the library. These are painting of former College of Engineering Deans. While planning for the renovation, Donn Hancher mentioned that they were really not being given the prominence they deserved. As Chair of the Renovation Team, Donn encouraged us to find a suitable place where we could group this historical collection. When we discussed it with our architect Dan Smith he suggested we place them in the current serials alcove.

Wide View Hall of DeansAnchored on one end of the gallery is the bust of the first Dean of the College of Engineering - Paul Anderson. His portrait is just to the right and then the succeeding Deans’ portraits follow on either end of the room. As new Deans retire, their portraits will be added to the hall. Please take some time to browse through the Hall next time you visit.

The New Look of Shaver Engineering Library

Over the summer a phrase from a song kept running through my mind. Those of you who are Trekkies will undoubtedly recognize it, “It’s been a long road, getting from there to here.” Those of you who are not into Star Trek might not recognize the first line from the Enterprise theme. But, it is so apt for our renovation - for the staff, patrons, neighbors in our building and renovation team. We have all endured the many months of changes that included asbestos abatement, extremely poor lighting, dust, shortened hours, inaccessible materials, and lots of noise. But, that is now all past and I will share with you the first pictures of our newly renovated space.

New Circulation Desk

We have had complaints from some of you for the lack of photos, but May, June and July were incredibly busy for staff as the shelving came down in reference and current serials and materials had to be boxed up and stored to make room for the carpeting installation, the new shelving and furniture. Jennifer Eskew, Senior Library Technician (Shaver Engineering Library) managed this organized chaos with great finesse. She made sure materials were moved in and out on schedule, lining up folks from the UK Libraries, Surplus or FPAT as needed.

Many departments within the UK Libraries contributed to our renovation’s success - Access & Delivery, Collections & Technical Services, Research & Education, Information Technology. We could not have done it without your help. A special thanks to Susan Daole, Senior Library Technician - Education Library and Heather Petsche, Senior Library Technician - Fine Arts Library for lending us student assistants to help with this enormous undertaking. We have created a large “Thank You” poster with everyone’s name that worked on this project - from the contractors to the individuals within UK Libraries, College of Engineering, and PPD. Lynn Tilley (COE - IT) and Don Hill (PPD) were crucial to getting this project completed - thank you so much!

While contractors were installing the new lighting system, the ceiling and sprinkling systems, the library staff was busy working on moving more serials to storage. This is freeing up shelving to accomodate recently bound serials (2003-2006) that were shelved in the reference section. This project will be on-going. Christine Gearhart, Library Science Graduate Student Assistant heads up this project with team members Brandon Daniels - Lead Student Assistant and Tony Mayes - Student Assistant. We estimate that probably more than 8,000 serials have been moved to storage over the past two years.

We are so excited about our new facility - we have quiet space for grad students, team study rooms, and social space. Of course, there is a lot of nice bright light in the library, new carpeting, furniture and circulation desk. Keep watching this space as we plan more great things going forward!

A special thank you to President Todd, Provost Subbaswamy and Dean Lester for their support in helping us transform our dream into reality. A special thanks to Donn Hancher for spearheading this project.

So while I apologize for not publishing pictures this summer I think you will be surprised to see results. It is light, bright and airy. Let me know what you think. And please, stop in and see us!

New Services in Shaver Engineering Library

Shaver Engineering Library is happy to offer several new services beginning with Fall 2007. The former library office is now a multi-tasking room. It will be used as a training room by staff, can be booked for small meetings or team space, and when not booked it will be available for general computer use, although these computers will be different from those in the main part of the library. Lynn Tilley - Director of The College of Engineering Information Techology Department is collaborating with Shaver Engineering Library to provide computers that will have both engineering software and Microsoft Office. When this room is not being used for training or team study, students will be able to use the computers. Stay tuned for room availability as we are still working on networking, lighting and infrastructure.

Just past the Hall of Deans where the current serials are shelved, you will find a smaller team study room. This room will be available for booking as well. Eventually we hope to offer portable white boards for use in these two rooms.

Please ask at the circulation desk to make booking arrangements or call 257-4364.
