Welcome

Welcome to the Engineering Launchpad, a starting point for College of Engineering Students, Staff, and Faculty exploring the College's computer systems. This page will include useful information about the College's computing resources, how you can access them, and what they can do for you.

News

We use the SpamAssassin mail scanner on our mail server. SpamAssassin scans all incoming e-mail and scores it for the probability that it is spam. Mails that score higher than a set threshold are tagged as "**SPAM**", so they may be easily sorted or deleted. (We have currently set the threshold to 6 "hits".) Check here to learn how to sort spam out of your Inbox into a separate folder.

Email Accounts

Beginning with the 2011 Fall Semester, we will no longer be creating Engineering Email accounts for students. Instead, we will use your University Email Address (UEA) to communicate with you.

Please use the UK Account Manager to create your UEA and activate either a Microsoft Live or a Google Apps for Education account.

Existing Engineering Email accounts will not be affected by this change. However, we will use your UEA to construct our student mailing lists (see below).

Engineering WebMail

If you have an Engineering Email Account, you can access it from any web browser, on any net-connected computer on the planet. To access your email pick WebMail from the navigation bar on the left, or point your browser at http://mail.engr.uky.edu.

Students should click the link to WebMail; the "Engineering Exchange" link is for faculty and staff only.

Engineering Mailing Lists
We maintain several mailing lists for distributing information to all students in the College of Engineering. There are two basic types of these lists: lists for general information from the College administration, and lists for information related to engineering job opportunities. (Additional lists may be set up for individual classes or student groups.)

These are post-only lists, not intended for discussion. If you have questions or concerns about something that gets posted to any of these lists, please make sure your e-mail gets addressed to the person who sent the message, not to the list. (Class and group lists, however, may be set up to allow discussion.)

The general-information lists tend to have the suffix "-students", "-grads", or "-ugrads". These lists are created at the beginning of every semester, based on information we receive from the University registrar's office. Because the information that gets posted to these lists pertains to the functioning and/or activities of the College or your department, you cannot be unsubscribed from these lists. (Though, if you seem to be on the wrong list, you can ask us to put you on the right one.)

The other set of lists we maintain is for information related to engineering job opportunities. These have names that begin with "coe" or a departmental abbreviation, and end with "-jobs". We update these lists at the beginning of each semester; students for whom we create accounts will automatically be subscribed to these, as well. We realize, however, that not every student is concerned with finding a job in any given semester. For that reason, you are allowed to unsubscribe from the -jobs mailing lists.

If you wish to unsubscribe from the -jobs lists, or to set other list options, you can go to the list manager web site. Click on the name of the list you wish to modify, and log in. Your login name will be the e-mail address under which you're subscribed to the list; initially that should be your Engineering e-mail address, though that is one of the list options you can change. If you don't know your list password, you can request that the list manager e-mail it to you.
