Engineering Account Information

Engineering Computing Services has greatly simplified the creation of email/UNIX/web accounts for all undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Engineering. If you are currently enrolled as a student, your email account should already exist.

If you wish to activate your UNIX or web account, send mail to help@engr.uky.edu.

The purpose of this page is to help you find out what your userid is.

Notice to incoming freshmen

We create accounts for new students beginning the week before their classes start. If you registered during the winter term for classes beginning in August, your account will not be created until August.

ECS Unix User IDs Explained

All Engineering students automatically have Engineering (ECS) email accounts.

We use the following rationale for choosing your Engineering userid:

If we knew your UK username when we created your account, and we hadn't already given it to someone else (in a previous year), we used that. Otherwise, we use the first initial of your first name, plus the first initial of your second name (if we know that), the first four letters of your last name, and a digit (0, usually).

Your initial (default) password is "u$" followed by the last six (6) digits of your student/staff/faculty identification number.

Some examples:

First Middle Last fmlast0
John D. Miller jdmill0
Michael Pelikan mpeli0
James D Millken jdmill1
(there is already a "jdmill0" so the digit on this last one is "1")

The email address for John Miller would then be: jdmill0@engr.uky.edu
