AREMA Awards Scholarships to Two UK Engineering Students
|

Nathan Ridgeway and Justin Brown --- were recently awarded scholarships for the coming academic year by the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association's Educational Foundation. These represent two of 32 scholarships awarded in the national competition. A special session at the AREMA Annual Conference this September in Chicago affords the students an opportunity to "meet the industry" by rubbing elbows with the chief engineers, etc. of the railroads, consulting engineers, suppliers, and contractors.

Mining Engineering Student Receives Award and Scholarship

Mehmet Saracoglu, a doctoral candidate in mining engineering was one of three University of Kentucky students presented with the Viji Jeganathan Award for Cross-Cultural Understanding. The award and $1,000 scholarship applicable toward tuition for the fall 2009 semester was awarded to Saracoglu by the UK Office of International Affairs.

Kentucky had another great day of raycing at FSGP. Gato del Sol III completed 138 laps which brought the race total to 247 laps or 419.9 miles. Officially the UK Solar Car team finished in 2nd place! This is a huge step for our team!

UK to 'unroll' papyrus scrolls buried by Vesuvius
Computer scientist hopes to unlock secrets of 2,000-year-old scrolls

Brent Seales, the Gill professor of engineering in UK's computer science department, will use an X-Ray CT scanning system to collect interior images of the scrolls' rolled-up pages. Then, he and his colleagues hope to digitally "unroll" the scrolls on a computer screen so scholars can read them.

The University of Kentucky’s College of Engineering recognized 543 graduates in ceremonies Saturday, May 9, 2009 at Heritage Hall Center and East in Lexington. The college’s event followed UK’s 142nd commencement at Rupp Arena.

On Friday, April 17, former Kentucky Transportation Secretary Calvin Grayson, Brigadier Gen. Timothy A. Byers, one of UK's longest serving faculty members, Bobby O. Hardin, and company executives Joseph D. Hicks Jr., and L. Stanley Pigman were inducted into the University of Kentucky College of Engineering's 2009 Hall of Distinction.
