Women in Engineering Mechanical Engineering Workshop
June 5 @ 10:00 am - 4:30 pm EDT
Mechanical engineers design, analyze, produce and maintain mechanical systems. These systems can range in scale and sophistication from the tiny microfluidic devices used in medicine, to massive wind turbines delivering clean energy. A mechanical engineer therefore needs to have a very diverse set of skills and is trained in dynamics, control systems, vibrations, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials and design, as well as receiving a background in structural, electrical and chemical systems. In this workshop, students will learn about some of the many fields mechanical engineers work in. Students will have the opportunity to experience the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) lab, perform experiments using a wind tunnel, and tour many of the facilities in the Mechanical Engineering department. Students will then use their new aerodynamics experience to design, build, and launch their own miniature glider that they can take home at the end of the day.
