Women in Engineering Biosystems Engineering Workshop

Biosystems engineers provide an essential link between biological sciences and the engineering profession. The biosystems field encompasses a variety of specialization areas including environment, biotechnology, food processing, machine systems and controlled environments. This workshop will focus on the area of food engineering, a field where engineering principles are applied to the conversion of agricultural products to nutritious, safe and stable food items. Food engineering takes cooking, baking, and preparing food to the extreme: 1) creating new and exciting foods, 2) making sure our food is nutritious and safe, 3) and helping to feed the ever growing population. In this workshop, you will learn about the origin and science behind making cheese. We’ll talk about how microorganisms can be utilized to make a wide variety of foods, but how we also need to make sure that the dangerous microorganisms are eliminated from our food. In the food engineering laboratory, we’ll make cheese and explore the differences in the final product based on various processing choices. We’ll explore the analytical equipment in the food engineering lab and even create our own new and exciting food.
