Walk Up Contest
Electromagnet Contest 2008

Objective:

The purpose of this competition is to allow participant to build an Electromagnet, and test their design against those of the other participants. Participants will gain an understanding of how an electromagnet works and the possible designs through demonstration, investigation, questioning the available resources, and by example.

Design:

The electromagnet can be built in any fashion imaginable to the participant. Examples and general ideas will be provided. Investigation and ingenuity should be the key.

Required supplies: ( Will be Provided at the contest)

  • Styrofoam cups
  • Awl or punching device to make holes in cups
  • Crafting string
  • 10 paper clips, heavy duty to secure the string for the magnet
  • Ball bearings
  • Copper insulated wire
  • Magnetic Wire
  • Aluminum Wire
  • Aluminum Nails
  • Steel Nails
  • Iron Nails
  • Some current limiting resistors for demonstration purposes
  • Plastic core
  • Plastic beakers fi lled with water, salt water, and Deionized water for coresTape, 2 spools, (3.30)
  • RJ-45 wire
  • Phone wire
  • Coaxial cable

Restrictions:

  • Length of wire needs to be limited
  • Time is not a restriction
  • Magnet will be tested when completed, and 3 running leaders will be recorded.
  • Magnet must be solely built by participant without specific help from facilitators.
  • Each participant can only enter one magnet.
  • Two test will be allowed for an allowance of a “mess up.”

Winning:

The running 3 leaders will be recorded with number of BBs, and information. Email addresses will be recorded. Winners will be notified via email, and mailing address for prizes will be obtained.

Winners names will be posted on the IEEE website (first name and city)
